Sangria Cocktail Recipe

Sangria, a renowned refreshing cocktail, is actually a punch, made from wine and fruits. Besides these two essential ingredients, sangria can be prepared in various ways, depending on the preparer’s tastes and imagination.

In Spanish, the word “sangria” means “blood”, and it refers to the red color of the punch, which actually comes from its main ingredient: red wine. But sangrias are not only and necessarily made of red wine, white wine can also be used, but, in this specific case, the sangria will be called sangria blanco or white sangria. Typically served cold, among the many variations of this cocktail there’s one served hot, and obviously named hot sangria.

As said before, sangria is a punch; hence, it may include a wide variety of liquids, some of them even non-alcoholic. In order to prepare sangria, one can use red wine (by the original recipe), white wine, liquor, liqueurs, or fresh fruit juice. Normally, sangria consists of:

  • red wine
  • sliced or chopped fruits
  • liquor

  • A wide range of fruits can be used when preparing sangria, depending on one’s taste: melon, grapes, mango, apple, orange, lemon, peach, pineapple, berries etcetera.

Many recipes include also using soda water in the sangria, but this isn’t always necessary. Even the wine can be chosen, one might prefer a fruity wine or, the opposite, a dry wine. Even rose wine is sometimes used as an ingredient, due to its specific taste and lightness.

When making sangria, some useful tips might be a real good help:

  • when slicing the fruits, make sure they are finely and thinly sliced, it will permit to better absorb the liquids in the punch
  • before serving sangria, let it sit for a couple of hours, so all the aromas will blend in a tasteful and delicious way
  • add some extra spices to sangria, like perhaps cinnamon, it will enrich the taste, making it even more tasty
  • use frozen fruits instead of the simple ice cubes, you will avoid over-watering it, while adding some extra aroma
  • Here’s what it takes for 4 glasses of original sangria:

  • 3 1/4 cups of dry red wine
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • juice of 1 large orange
  • juice of 1 large lemon
  • 1 large orange, sliced thin crosswise
  • 1 large lemon, sliced thin crosswise
  • 2 medium peaches, peeled, pitted and cut into chunks
  • 1 cup of club soda

  • The preparation steps are easy, especially with the tips described above. All you have to do is mix all the ingredients, except for the club soda, which will be added at the end. Put the mixture into the refrigerator overnight, so the aromas will blend gently. Add the club soda just before serving, to add some fizz to the sangria. Use frozen fruits instead of ice cubes when serving.
